Koningsdam is docked at Canada Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 2, 2022, preparing for another Alaska voyage. We photographed the Holland America Line ship one day after returning to Vancouver from our own Alaska cruise aboard Queen Elizabeth.

Built by Fincantieri at Marghera, Italy, Koningsdam entered service in 2016 as the first ship of Holland America Line’s Pinnacle class. Her introduction marked the beginning of a new generation for the company, combining a larger platform with updated accommodations, dining venues and entertainment spaces while retaining elements of Holland America’s Dutch maritime identity.

The Pinnacle-class design was subsequently developed further aboard Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam. Together, the three ships represent Holland America’s largest contemporary class and an important stage in the modernization of the fleet.

History and Features

Pinnacle-Class Development:

  • Koningsdam was built by Fincantieri at its Marghera shipyard in Italy.

  • She entered service in 2016 as Holland America Line’s first Pinnacle-class ship.

  • Her maiden voyage began on April 8, 2016.

  • The Pinnacle class introduced a larger generation of Holland America ships while retaining a scale below many contemporary megaships.

  • The design was subsequently continued with Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam.

Dutch Heritage:

  • The name Koningsdam combines Holland America’s long-standing “dam” naming tradition with the Dutch word “Koning,” meaning king.

  • The name honored King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and marked the first time Holland America had used Koningsdam for one of its ships.

  • Queen Máxima of the Netherlands serves as the ship’s godmother.

  • Dutch influences appear throughout the vessel, connecting the modern ship with Holland America Line’s origins in Rotterdam.

Design and Accommodations:

  • At approximately 99,500 gross tons, Koningsdam was substantially larger than Holland America’s preceding Vista- and Signature-class ships.

  • The ship was designed for approximately 2,650 guests.

  • New accommodation concepts included purpose-built family staterooms capable of accommodating up to five guests.

  • Dedicated single ocean-view staterooms were also introduced for solo travelers.

  • These accommodations expanded the range of cabin types available within the Holland America fleet.

Music and Entertainment:

  • Music played an important role in the original interior concept for Koningsdam.

  • The ship introduced Holland America’s Music Walk concept, bringing several live-music venues together within a central entertainment area.

  • World Stage provided a major theater venue incorporating extensive LED technology.

  • The musical theme extended into artwork and design elements throughout the ship.

  • These concepts influenced entertainment spaces subsequently introduced aboard other Holland America ships.

Alaska Service:

  • Vancouver has served as an important homeport for Koningsdam during her Alaska deployments.

  • Round-trip Vancouver voyages allow ships to travel north through British Columbia’s Inside Passage before reaching Southeast Alaska.

  • Holland America has a particularly long history of operating Alaska cruises and land programs.

  • The Pinnacle-class ship combines substantial passenger facilities with outdoor and observation spaces suited to scenic cruising.

July 2, 2022 – Vancouver:

  • These photographs show Koningsdam alongside Canada Place on July 2, 2022.

  • Holland America’s 2022 schedule listed the ship beginning another seven-day round-trip Vancouver cruise that day.

  • Canada Place places cruise ships directly alongside downtown Vancouver, with Burrard Inlet and the North Shore mountains surrounding the harbor.

  • The setting provides particularly clear views of the ship’s profile and superstructure from several locations around the waterfront.

The Day After Our Queen Elizabeth Alaska Cruise:

  • We photographed Koningsdam one day after completing our own Alaska voyage aboard Queen Elizabeth.

  • Our Queen Elizabeth cruise had begun at Vancouver on June 24 and returned to the city on July 1.

  • That voyage included Glacier Bay, Icy Strait Point, Sitka and Ketchikan before returning south to Vancouver.

  • Although the Koningsdam photographs were taken after our cruise had ended, they form part of the ship activity we documented around Vancouver during the same trip.

  • Earlier in the journey we had also encountered Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam in Glacier Bay while aboard Queen Elizabeth.

Evolution of the Pinnacle Class:

  • Koningsdam established the basic platform for Holland America’s modern Pinnacle-class fleet.

  • Nieuw Statendam entered service in 2018 as the second member of the class.

  • Rotterdam followed in 2021 as the third ship and current flagship of Holland America Line.

  • The later ships developed the original concept while retaining the basic dimensions and recognizable profile introduced by Koningsdam.

  • Holland America continues to operate all three Pinnacle-class ships.

Continued Service:

  • Koningsdam has remained in Holland America service since 2016.

  • In March 2026, the ship returned from a significant dry-dock update that added and refreshed accommodations, entertainment areas and other passenger spaces.

  • The work included additional larger ocean-view staterooms, refreshed live-music venues, an expanded casino and updated finishes.

  • The continued investment in the ship reflects her ongoing role within Holland America’s fleet.

Legacy:

  • Koningsdam represents an important turning point in the development of the modern Holland America fleet.

  • As the first Pinnacle-class ship, she established a platform subsequently used for Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam.

  • Her introduction brought new accommodation concepts, entertainment spaces and a larger ship design while maintaining connections to Holland America’s Dutch heritage.

  • The July 2, 2022 Vancouver gallery documents Koningsdam during an Alaska deployment six years into her career and immediately after the conclusion of our own 2022 Alaska journey aboard Queen Elizabeth.

  • OLP Social: The first Pinnacle-class ship was preparing for another seven-day Alaska voyage one day after we completed our Queen Elizabeth cruise, bringing two generations of cruise ship design into the same trip.
