Silver Muse is seen departing Vancouver, British Columbia, on June 23, 2022. The Silversea Cruises ship was photographed one day before we boarded Queen Elizabeth at Canada Place for our Alaska cruise.

Built by Fincantieri in Italy, Silver Muse entered service in 2017 as the first ship of Silversea’s Muse class. At approximately 40,700 gross tons and 698 feet long, she was designed around the smaller scale and all-suite accommodations associated with Silversea while providing substantially more dining choices and public spaces than the company’s earlier vessels.

The Muse-class design later provided the basis for Silver Moon and Silver Dawn. Together, the three ships represent an important generation in the development of Silversea’s ocean-going fleet before the introduction of the larger Nova-class ships.

History and Features

Muse-Class Development:

  • Silver Muse was built by Fincantieri in Italy and entered service for Silversea Cruises in 2017.

  • She became the first ship of what developed into Silversea’s Muse class.

  • The design was subsequently used for sister ships Silver Moon and Silver Dawn.

  • At 40,700 gross tons, the ships remained relatively small compared with the increasingly large vessels entering service for many mainstream cruise lines.

  • The design instead emphasized passenger space, suites, dining choices and a relatively low guest capacity.

Design and Accommodations:

  • Silver Muse was designed as an all-suite ship.

  • All accommodations have ocean views, with most suites incorporating private verandas.

  • Butler service is provided throughout the ship’s suite categories.

  • The relatively low passenger count gives the vessel a different scale from large contemporary resort-style cruise ships.

  • Extensive outdoor spaces and observation areas maintain a strong connection with the sea and destinations visited during a voyage.

Dining and Public Spaces:

  • One of the important changes introduced with Silver Muse was a greater variety of dining venues.

  • The ship was designed with eight dining options rather than relying primarily on a large traditional main dining room.

  • Public spaces include lounges, observation areas, a spa, fitness facilities and outdoor decks.

  • The arrangement helped establish a design approach that Silversea continued to develop aboard later ships.

Silversea Service:

  • Since entering service in 2017, Silver Muse has operated international itineraries across several regions.

  • Her size allows her to combine longer ocean passages with visits to ports that may not regularly accommodate the largest contemporary cruise ships.

  • Alaska has been among the destinations served by the ship, with Vancouver functioning as an important gateway to the region.

  • Silversea has continued to update the vessel during her career, including a refurbishment in 2025.

June 23, 2022 – Vancouver:

  • These photographs show Silver Muse departing Vancouver on June 23, 2022.

  • The ship is seen underway rather than alongside at Canada Place, providing views of her profile against Vancouver and the surrounding coastal landscape.

  • Vancouver serves as one of the principal North American gateways for Alaska cruising.

  • Its location between the Coast Mountains and the waterways leading toward British Columbia’s Inside Passage creates a distinctive setting for arriving and departing passenger ships.

The Day Before Our Queen Elizabeth Alaska Cruise:

  • We photographed Silver Muse on June 23, one day before the beginning of our 2022 Alaska cruise aboard Queen Elizabeth.

  • We boarded Queen Elizabeth at Vancouver on June 24 for Day 1 of the voyage.

  • Our itinerary then took us north toward Glacier Bay, Icy Strait Point, Sitka and Ketchikan before returning to Vancouver on July 1.

  • Although the Silver Muse photographs were taken before our cruise officially began, they form part of the Vancouver ship activity surrounding the start of that trip.

  • The following day, Celebrity Millennium was among the other passenger ships we photographed as we prepared to board Queen Elizabeth at Canada Place.

Evolution of the Silversea Fleet:

  • Silver Muse represented a significant step in the development of Silversea’s fleet when she entered service in 2017.

  • The ship retained the smaller scale and all-suite concept associated with the company while expanding the number and variety of onboard venues.

  • Her basic design was continued with Silver Moon and Silver Dawn.

  • Silversea later moved toward a larger and substantially different design with the Nova class.

  • Silver Muse therefore occupies an important position between Silversea’s earlier generation of smaller ships and the company’s newer vessels.

Legacy:

  • As the first Muse-class ship, Silver Muse established a design that influenced an important period of Silversea fleet development.

  • Her combination of approximately 40,700 gross tons, all-suite accommodations and a relatively small passenger complement distinguished her from the much larger ships being introduced elsewhere in the cruise industry.

  • The June 23, 2022 Vancouver gallery documents the ship five years into her career and immediately before the beginning of our own 2022 Alaska journey aboard Queen Elizabeth.

  • OLP Social: Departing Vancouver just one day before our own Alaska cruise, this all-suite luxury vessel represents a smaller, destination-focused approach to cruising, with the first Muse-class ship entering service in 2017.
