ZUIDERDAM
March 28, 2026 | Caribbean Cruise – Day 4: Amber Cove, Dominican Republic
Day 4 of our 10-day Caribbean cruise aboard Zuiderdam (Holland America Line) brought us to Amber Cove, Dominican Republic, on March 28, 2026. Following our visit to Grand Turk, the ship continued to the Dominican Republic’s north coast before a day at sea on the way to the ABC islands.
Zuiderdam marked the beginning of a new generation of Holland America Line cruise ships when she entered service in 2002. Built by Fincantieri at Marghera, Italy, she introduced the company’s Vista class, combining a larger passenger-ship design with extensive ocean-view accommodations and verandahs. Her three Holland America sister ships, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Noordam, followed over the next several years. Together, their names represent the four compass directions in Dutch, continuing the company’s longstanding ship-naming tradition.
The Vista design retained Holland America’s traditional maritime identity while introducing expanded passenger facilities and a greater emphasis on views of the sea. During her career, Zuiderdam has operated Caribbean cruises, Alaska voyages and international itineraries. Our March and April 2026 cruise provided an opportunity to experience the ship firsthand while documenting several ports across the Caribbean.

History and Features
Construction and Entry Into Service:
Zuiderdam was constructed by Fincantieri at its Marghera shipyard near Venice, Italy.
Her float-out took place on December 14, 2001, followed by fitting-out work and sea trials during 2002.
She was delivered to Holland America Line in November 2002.
Broadcaster Joan Lunden named the ship at Port Everglades on December 14, 2002.
The ship departed on her maiden voyage that same day, beginning her career with Caribbean cruising.
Oosterdam, Westerdam and Noordam subsequently joined her as Holland America’s four Vista-class ships.
Design and Features:
The Vista-class design placed greater emphasis on ocean views and balcony accommodations than many of Holland America’s earlier ships.
Zuiderdam combines a traditional dark hull and white superstructure with a modern cruise-ship layout.
Her machinery incorporates diesel engines and a gas turbine, supplying power for shipboard operations and electric propulsion.
Two Azipod propulsion units provide propulsion and maneuverability.
Public spaces include the Crow’s Nest observation lounge, dining rooms, entertainment venues and outdoor promenade areas.
The Lido Pool’s retractable roof allows the space to be used in different weather conditions.
Our 2026 Caribbean Cruise:
Our 10-day Caribbean cruise aboard Zuiderdam began in Miami on March 25, 2026.
March 25 was Day 1 and embarkation day, followed by Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas on March 26.
The ship visited Grand Turk on March 27 before continuing to Amber Cove on March 28.
Amber Cove was Day 4 of the voyage and our third destination after leaving Miami.
March 29 was spent at sea as the ship continued toward the southern Caribbean.
The next ports were Kralendijk, Bonaire, on March 30; Willemstad, Curaçao, on March 31; and Oranjestad, Aruba, on April 1.
Two further days at sea followed before our return to Miami on April 4.
This gallery forms part of our photographic record of the same voyage documented in the Curaçao and Aruba galleries.
Amber Cove – March 28, 2026:
Our Day 4 call brought Zuiderdam to Amber Cove on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.
The cruise port is located in the Bay of Maimón, near Puerto Plata, rather than within Puerto Plata’s historic city center.
Amber Cove opened in 2015 as a purpose-built cruise destination serving the surrounding region.
Its coastal setting provides a different backdrop from the island ports visited earlier in our cruise.
The port serves as a gateway to Puerto Plata and destinations along the Dominican Republic’s northern coast.
Our photographs document Zuiderdam during this stop before the voyage continued toward the ABC islands.
After leaving Amber Cove, a day at sea separated the Dominican Republic visit from our arrival in Bonaire.
Service:
Zuiderdam began her passenger service in the Caribbean in December 2002.
She made her first Alaska season in 2006, operating seven-day cruises from Seattle.
Her subsequent career has included a range of regional and longer international cruises.
Our March 2026 sailing combined the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, the Dominican Republic and the ABC islands in one roundtrip voyage from Miami.
The Amber Cove visit formed part of the northern Caribbean portion of that itinerary.
Legacy:
Zuiderdam introduced the Vista-class design to Holland America Line.
The class helped establish the company’s approach to larger ships with more verandahs and expanded passenger facilities.
Her name incorporates the Dutch word “zuid,” meaning south, while her sister ships complete the compass-point theme.
Our 2026 cruise adds a firsthand voyage aboard the first Holland America Vista-class ship to the Ocean Liner Photography collection.
OLP Social: Our third port of call brought us to the Dominican Republic’s north coast before a day at sea and the southern Caribbean stops in Bonaire, Curaçao and Aruba.
