CELEBRITY EDGE

March 9, 2025 | Sydney, Australia

Celebrity Edge (Celebrity Cruises) was in Sydney on March 9, 2025, during her second season sailing from Australia. With her distinctive orange Magic Carpet visible along the starboard side, the ship brought one of Celebrity’s most recognizable modern designs to Sydney Harbour.

Entering service in 2018, Celebrity Edge introduced an entirely new generation of ships for Celebrity Cruises. Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, the ship departed significantly from the design of Celebrity’s earlier vessels, introducing features including the Magic Carpet, Infinite Veranda staterooms, and the outward-facing Resort Deck.

History and Features

Construction and Entry Into Service:

  • Celebrity Edge was built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France.

  • She entered service in December 2018 as the first ship in Celebrity Cruises’ Edge Class.

  • The ship introduced a new design direction for Celebrity after a decade dominated by the Solstice Class.

  • Her design placed greater emphasis on connecting interior spaces with the sea and surrounding destinations.

  • Celebrity Edge became the prototype for the Edge-class ships that followed.

Design and Features:

  • The Magic Carpet is the ship’s most recognizable exterior feature, appearing as a large orange platform suspended along the starboard side.

  • The platform travels between different deck levels and can serve as a lounge, dining space, and tender embarkation area depending on its position.

  • Infinite Veranda accommodations allow the balcony area to become part of the cabin when the exterior window is closed.

  • Eden combines panoramic windows with dining, entertainment, and lounge areas at the stern.

  • The Rooftop Garden provides an outdoor gathering and entertainment space high on the ship.

  • The Resort Deck includes the main pool and distinctive outward-facing spaces designed to emphasize views of the sea.

Service:

  • Celebrity Edge initially operated primarily in the Caribbean and Europe.

  • Her deployments later expanded to include Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific.

  • In October 2023, she became the first Edge-class ship to operate from Australia.

  • Sydney has since served as an important seasonal homeport for the ship.

  • During the 2024–25 season, Celebrity Edge operated voyages from Sydney to destinations throughout Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific.

Australia and Sydney:

  • Celebrity Edge returned to Sydney for her second Australian season in 2024–25.

  • Her regional itineraries included cruises along the Australian coast as well as voyages to New Zealand and South Pacific destinations.

  • Sydney Harbour provides a particularly recognizable setting for the ship, with the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge surrounding the city’s cruise terminals.

  • The Australian deployment marked a significant expansion of Celebrity’s Edge-class ships beyond their earlier European and North American cruising regions.

Edge Class:

  • Celebrity Edge is the first ship in Celebrity Cruises’ Edge Class.

  • She was followed by Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Beyond, Celebrity Ascent, and Celebrity Xcel.

  • The class introduced a number of concepts that distinguish the ships from Celebrity’s earlier Millennium and Solstice classes.

  • The Magic Carpet remains one of the most recognizable exterior features of the entire Celebrity Cruises fleet.

  • At around 130,000 gross tons, Celebrity Edge is larger than the Solstice-class ships while carrying fewer passengers than many similarly sized contemporary cruise ships.

Legacy:

  • Celebrity Edge marked one of the most significant changes in Celebrity Cruises ship design since the introduction of the Solstice Class.

  • Her Magic Carpet, Infinite Verandas, and outward-focused public spaces established features subsequently developed across the Edge Class.

  • Her deployment to Australia expanded the geographic reach of the class and made Sydney an important part of the ship’s career.

  • The design introduced by Celebrity Edge continues to influence Celebrity Cruises’ newest ships.
