History and Features

Construction and Entry Into Service:

  • Ovation of the Seas was built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany.

  • She was delivered to Royal Caribbean in April 2016.

  • The ship is the third member of the Quantum Class, following Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas.

  • Her inaugural voyage departed Southampton on April 14, 2016.

  • After entering service, Ovation of the Seas repositioned to Asia and initially spent much of her time sailing from China.

Design and Features:

  • North Star carries guests in a glass observation capsule high above the ship for panoramic views.

  • RipCord by iFLY provides a shipboard skydiving experience.

  • SeaPlex is a large indoor activity complex that can host bumper cars, sports, games, and other activities.

  • Two70 combines floor-to-ceiling windows with entertainment technology and robotic screens.

  • Other features include the FlowRider surf simulator, rock-climbing wall, pools, Solarium, theater, spa, restaurants, and lounges.

  • Extensive indoor public areas make the ship particularly well suited to itineraries in cooler climates.

Service:

  • Ovation of the Seas began her career with deployments in Asia before expanding to Australia, Alaska, Hawaii, and the Pacific.

  • Sydney became one of the ship’s primary seasonal homeports.

  • Australian deployments have included cruises to New Zealand, Tasmania, the South Pacific, and destinations along the Australian coast.

  • During the Northern Hemisphere summer, the ship has also operated Alaska cruises from Seattle.

  • Her seasonal movements between Australia and North America have included longer repositioning voyages across the Pacific.

Sydney and Australia:

  • Ovation of the Seas has been a regular seasonal visitor to Sydney since arriving in Australia in December 2016.

  • At the time, she was one of the largest cruise ships ever based in Australia.

  • Her size requires her to use Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay because she is too tall to pass beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

  • From Sydney, the ship has operated itineraries throughout Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific.

  • During the 2024–25 season, Ovation of the Seas once again used Sydney as a seasonal base before repositioning across the Pacific.

Quantum Class:

  • Royal Caribbean’s original Quantum Class consists of Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, and Ovation of the Seas.

  • The ships introduced features including North Star, RipCord by iFLY, SeaPlex, and Two70.

  • Spectrum of the Seas and Odyssey of the Seas later followed with an evolved Quantum Ultra design.

  • The class was designed with extensive indoor spaces and technology suited to a wide variety of climates and cruising regions.

Legacy:

  • Ovation of the Seas helped establish Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class in the Asia-Pacific region.

  • Her long association with Sydney has made her one of Royal Caribbean’s most recognizable seasonal ships in Australia.

  • Features such as North Star, SeaPlex, and Two70 distinguish her from earlier generations of Royal Caribbean vessels.

  • Her deployments across Australia, Alaska, Asia, and the Pacific demonstrate the versatility of the Quantum-class design.
