Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire, France, Celebrity Millennium entered service in 2000 as the first of Celebrity Cruises’ four Millennium-class ships. The class introduced a new generation of vessels for Celebrity and was particularly notable for its gas-turbine power plant and azimuthing propulsion system.
By the time of the June 2022 photographs, Celebrity Millennium had been sailing for more than two decades and had undergone several major updates. Her most extensive transformation came in 2019 as part of Celebrity Cruises’ fleetwide Celebrity Revolution program, substantially redesigning accommodations and public spaces while retaining the ship’s recognizable Millennium-class profile.

History and Features
Millennium-Class Development:
Celebrity Millennium was built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire, France.
She entered service in 2000 as the first ship of Celebrity Cruises’ Millennium class.
The class eventually consisted of four vessels: Celebrity Millennium, Celebrity Infinity, Celebrity Summit and Celebrity Constellation.
At approximately 965 feet long and 90,940 gross tons, the ships represented a major expansion in scale for Celebrity Cruises at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
The Millennium-class design has remained an important part of the Celebrity fleet for more than two decades.
Propulsion and Technology:
One of the most notable features of the Millennium class was its use of gas-turbine machinery.
Electrical power generated aboard the ship supplies azimuthing propulsion units rather than a conventional fixed propeller and rudder arrangement.
The propulsion system was an important technological feature when the class entered service.
Celebrity Millennium was designed for speeds of approximately 24 knots, allowing her to operate a wide range of international itineraries.
Celebrity Cruises Service:
Celebrity Millennium began her maiden voyage on July 1, 2000.
During her career, she has operated in numerous regions including the Caribbean, Alaska, Asia and the Pacific.
Her combination of size and range has allowed Celebrity to reposition the ship between very different seasonal markets.
Alaska has been an important part of her deployment history, with Vancouver serving as one of the principal gateways for voyages along the Inside Passage.
2019 Celebrity Revolution:
Celebrity Millennium underwent an extensive modernization completed in February 2019.
The work formed part of Celebrity Cruises’ fleetwide Celebrity Revolution program.
Staterooms were substantially redesigned and updated.
Suite accommodations became part of The Retreat concept, which incorporated dedicated spaces for suite guests.
Restaurants, lounges and other public areas received significant changes.
The modernization extended the working life of the ship while bringing many passenger spaces closer to the design standards introduced aboard newer Celebrity vessels.

Canada Place is one of the principal passenger terminals for Alaska cruises departing from British Columbia.
The downtown location places cruise ships directly against the Vancouver skyline with the mountains of the North Shore beyond.

Our Queen Elizabeth Alaska Cruise – Day 1:
June 24, 2022 was Day 1 of our Alaska cruise aboard Queen Elizabeth.
We boarded Queen Elizabeth at Vancouver for the beginning of our eight-day voyage.
Seeing and photographing other passenger ships in Vancouver formed part of the embarkation-day experience before our own departure.
Celebrity Millennium was one of the ships sharing Vancouver’s cruise facilities as the Alaska season was underway.

Vancouver and Alaska Cruising:
Vancouver has long served as one of the most important homeports for Alaska cruising.
Ships departing the city can travel north through the protected waterways of British Columbia before reaching Southeast Alaska.
Canada Place places large passenger ships in the center of Vancouver, creating one of the most recognizable cruise-port settings on the Pacific coast.
The combination of city skyline, harbor activity and surrounding mountains makes Vancouver particularly distinctive as an embarkation port.
A Long-Serving Celebrity Ship:
By June 2022, Celebrity Millennium had been in service for nearly 22 years.
Her continued operation demonstrates the ability of major refurbishment programs to extend the careers of modern cruise ships.
Although her interiors have changed substantially since 2000, her exterior retains the proportions and profile associated with Celebrity’s original Millennium-class design.
The ship remains the namesake and first member of a class that became an important part of Celebrity Cruises’ fleet development.
Legacy:
Celebrity Millennium represents an important generation in Celebrity Cruises history.
As the first Millennium-class ship, she introduced the design and technical approach subsequently used for three sister ships.
Her gas-turbine machinery and azimuthing propulsion distinguished the class when it entered service at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
