MT CALIFORNIA
May - July, 2024 | Valdez, Alaska, United States of America
In the summer of 2024, my son, a Cal Maritime cadet, had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience during his commercial cruise aboard the MT California, a crude oil tanker owned by Crowley Alaska Tankers. These photos capture the vessel in Valdez, Alaska, Port Angeles, Washington, and other ports highlighting its impressive size and significant role in transporting Alaskan crude oil to West Coast refineries. The images showcase the bustling activity around the ports and the operational environment of this vital maritime asset, reflecting both the ship’s functionality and the real-world training experiences for maritime cadets.
The MT California (Crowley Alaska Tankers) is a crude oil tanker built in 2015. Measuring 251 meters (823 feet) in length and 44 meters (144 feet) in beam, the vessel boasts a deadweight tonnage of 114,756 and a capacity to carry 818,000 barrels of crude oil. Registered in Wilmington, Delaware, the California is a crucial asset for transporting Alaskan crude oil to refineries on the U.S. West Coast.
Originally built as part of a series of modern tankers designed for efficiency and safety, the California plays a vital role in the maritime transportation industry. Before being named California, the ship was known as Eagle Bay when it was operated by SeaRiver Maritime, Inc. The ship was acquired by Crowley Alaska Tankers in 2018 as part of Crowley's expansion to provide dedicated crude oil transportation services from Alaska to the West Coast refineries.
