July 31, 2024 | Norway Cruise – Day 5 – Geiranger, Norway

Rotterdam called at Geiranger, Norway, on July 31, 2024, during Day 5 of our seven-night Norway cruise. The itinerary combined time at Geiranger with scenic cruising through Geirangerfjord before continuing to Bergen.

Rotterdam was photographed at Geiranger, Norway, on July 31, 2024, during Day 5 of our seven-night Norway cruise. Sailing roundtrip from Rotterdam in the Netherlands, the cruise brought together Norwegian coastal towns and fjord scenery. Geiranger followed our call at Molde and preceded Bergen, placing this gallery within the southern part of our route along Norway’s western coast.

Built by Fincantieri in Italy and delivered in July 2021, Rotterdam became Holland America Line’s third Pinnacle-class ship and the seventh vessel to carry the name. Her design followed Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam, combining the company’s established style with contemporary public rooms and a strong emphasis on music. At nearly 300 meters long, she brought the scale of a modern cruise ship into a landscape shaped by glaciers.

Geiranger lies at the inner end of Geirangerfjord, where steep mountains, waterfalls and historic farms give the surrounding landscape its distinctive character. The fjord forms part of the West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2005 alongside Nærøyfjord. Our itinerary included both Geiranger and scenic cruising through the fjord, making the passage through the landscape part of the cruise itself.

History and Features

Construction and Delivery:

  • Rotterdam was built at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Italy, continuing the yard’s longstanding relationship with Holland America Line.

  • Her launch took place on October 1, 2020, allowing the fitting-out phase to proceed before delivery the following summer.

  • Holland America Line took delivery on July 30, 2021, following a handover ceremony held at the shipyard the previous evening.

  • Delivery and entry into passenger service were separate milestones, with the ship remaining in non-guest operations after the handover.

The Pinnacle Class:

  • Rotterdam is the third ship in the Pinnacle class, following Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam.

  • The three ships share a design measuring nearly 300 meters long, with accommodation planned around 2,668 passengers at double occupancy.

  • The class brought a larger ship design to Holland America Line while retaining familiar dining venues, lounges and public spaces.

  • Rotterdam continued this development rather than introducing an entirely separate class, building on features already established aboard her sisters.

A Historic Holland America Name:

  • The present Rotterdam is the seventh ship to carry the name in Holland America Line’s history.

  • The original Rotterdam began her maiden voyage from Rotterdam to New York on October 15, 1872.

  • Successive ships carrying the name connected the company’s passenger service with its Dutch origins and the port of Rotterdam.

  • The current ship carries that heritage into a career centered on cruising, rather than the scheduled transatlantic service associated with earlier generations.

Naming in the Netherlands:

  • Rotterdam was officially named in her namesake city on May 30, 2022, after her delivery and entry into service.

  • Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands served as godmother, continuing a longstanding connection between the Dutch royal family and Holland America Line.

  • The ceremony brought the ship’s name, home country and company heritage together in the port of Rotterdam.

  • The naming celebration formed part of a Norway cruise, connecting the occasion with the Northern European waters that would feature in her operating program.

Design and Public Spaces:

  • Tihany Design and Yran & Storbraaten contributed to interiors that combined contemporary styling with Holland America Line’s established design traditions.

  • Music provided an architectural theme for many public spaces, extending its influence beyond the ship’s performance venues.

  • World Stage incorporated a 270-degree LED screen arrangement, surrounding the performance area with a broad visual backdrop.

  • Dining venues included the main Dining Room, Pinnacle Grill and Tamarind, offering different settings within the ship’s passenger spaces.

Geirangerfjord and World Heritage:

  • Geirangerfjord forms part of the West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Nærøyfjord.

  • Inscribed in 2005, the designation recognizes an exceptional fjord landscape shaped by glacial processes.

  • Steep rock walls, waterfalls and the relationship between mountains and water are central features of the protected landscape.

  • For a cruise ship sailing into Geiranger, the approach through the fjord connects the destination with the surrounding scenery.

Waterfalls and Fjord Farms:

  • The Seven Sisters waterfall is among Geirangerfjord’s best-known natural features, with several streams descending toward the water.

  • The Suitor waterfall lies on the opposite side of the fjord, while the Bridal Veil is another named feature along its sides.

  • Historic farms occupy ledges and slopes above the fjord, reflecting earlier ways of living and working in this steep terrain.

  • These farms add a human history to the landscape, complementing the geological features for which Geirangerfjord is widely known.

July 31, 2024 – Day 5 at Geiranger:

  • This gallery features Rotterdam at Geiranger during our seven-night Norway cruise from July 27 to August 3, 2024.

  • The published itinerary scheduled the call from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., together with scenic cruising in Geirangerfjord.

  • Geiranger followed Molde on our route, with Bergen scheduled for the following day.

  • These photographs show Rotterdam during the Geiranger portion of our cruise, distinct from the separate Molde gallery taken one day earlier.

  • OLP Social: Day five of our seven night Norway cruise brought a call at Geiranger, with scenic fjord cruising on the itinerary before continuing south to Bergen.

  • OLP Social 2: Built by Fincantieri in Italy and delivered in July 2021, she is the third Pinnacle class ship and carries a name used by Holland America since 1872.

  • OLP Social 3: At 984 feet long and nearly 100,000 gross tons, she carries 2,668 guests at double occupancy, with dimensions shared across the Pinnacle class.

  • OLP Social 4: On our cruise, she sailed into Geirangerfjord, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, where steep mountain slopes and waterfalls frame the route.
