QUEEN ELIZABETH
June 27, 2022 | Alaska Cruise – Day 4: Icy Strait Point, Alaska
Queen Elizabeth (Cunard) arrived at Icy Strait Point, Alaska, on June 27, 2022, for Day 4 of our seven-night Alaska cruise. Following the previous day's scenic cruising in Glacier Bay, the visit brought the ship to the waters near Hoonah for our next port call before continuing to Sitka.
Queen Elizabeth arrived at Icy Strait Point, Alaska, on June 27, 2022, for Day 4 of our seven-night Alaska cruise from Vancouver. The call followed a full day of scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park and brought us to the waters near the community of Hoonah for the next stage of our voyage.
Icy Strait Point offered a different Alaska experience from the dramatic glaciers and mountain scenery of the previous day. Developed around a historic salmon cannery near Hoonah, the destination combines the maritime and industrial history of Southeast Alaska with access to the surrounding forests, waterways, and wildlife habitat.
For Queen Elizabeth, the port call was part of an Alaska program that brought Cunard's traditions and distinctive shipboard experience to the Pacific Northwest and Southeast Alaska. The ship's dark hull, white superstructure, and red-and-black Cunard funnel provided a distinctive contrast with the forested shoreline surrounding Icy Strait Point.

History and Features
Construction and Entry Into Service:
Queen Elizabeth was built by Fincantieri at Monfalcone, Italy, for Cunard.
She joined the Cunard fleet in 2010 as a sister ship to Queen Victoria.
Queen Elizabeth II served as the ship's godmother and named her in Southampton in October 2010.
Her interiors incorporate Art Deco influences and references to earlier Cunard ships, particularly the original Queen Elizabeth.
Although she carries one of Cunard's most historic names, the present Queen Elizabeth is a cruise ship rather than an ocean liner.
Design and Cunard Identity:
Queen Elizabeth combines a modern cruise-ship platform with design elements intended to maintain a recognizable Cunard identity.
Her exterior carries Cunard's traditional dark hull, white superstructure, and red-and-black funnel.
Interior spaces include the multi-level Grand Lobby, Queens Room, Royal Court Theatre, library, Golden Lion, Commodore Club, and Garden Lounge.
Cunard's traditional dining structure includes Britannia accommodations along with Princess Grill and Queens Grill categories.
Open decks provide extensive viewing areas particularly suited to scenic itineraries such as Alaska.
Icy Strait Point:
Icy Strait Point is located near the community of Hoonah in Southeast Alaska.
The destination developed around a historic salmon cannery and has been adapted as a cruise destination while retaining elements of the site's industrial history.
Its setting provides access to the forests and waterways of the surrounding region.
The port offers a different experience from Alaska's larger cruise destinations, with the community of Hoonah nearby.
The area's natural surroundings make wildlife, coastal scenery, and the maritime environment important parts of the visit.
Day 4 – June 27, 2022:
June 27 marked Day 4 of our seven-night Alaska cruise aboard Queen Elizabeth.
We had embarked in Vancouver on June 24.
Day 2 was spent at sea as the ship continued north toward Alaska.
Day 3 brought scenic cruising through Glacier Bay.
On Day 4, Queen Elizabeth arrived at Icy Strait Point for our next Alaska port call.
The voyage continued to Sitka the following day.

The Icy Strait Point call marked the transition from the scenic cruising of Glacier Bay to a series of Southeast Alaska port visits. After Icy Strait Point, our voyage continued to Sitka and Ketchikan before the final sea day and return to Vancouver.
Queen Elizabeth in Alaska:
Alaska became an important seasonal destination for Queen Elizabeth, with Vancouver serving as a gateway for her voyages through the region.
Cunard's Alaska itineraries combined scenic cruising with calls at communities throughout Southeast Alaska.
Glacier viewing, coastal landscapes, wildlife, and port visits provided a distinctly different setting from the ship's European and warmer-weather deployments.
Queen Elizabeth's extensive open decks and indoor observation areas provide multiple places from which to experience Alaska's scenery.
Cunard's Alaska programs added another chapter to the company's long history of operating passenger ships on extended international and regional voyages.
Connection to the Voyage Collection:
This Icy Strait Point gallery forms part of the larger Ocean Liner Photography collection from our June 2022 voyage aboard Queen Elizabeth.
The master Alaska cruise page provides the overview of the complete seven-night voyage.
The Vancouver Day 1 and At Sea Day 2 pages document the beginning of the cruise.
Day 3 was spent cruising Glacier Bay, although there is currently no separate Glacier Bay gallery page in this collection.
This page continues the chronology with Day 4 at Icy Strait Point.
The voyage continued to Sitka on Day 5.
Legacy:
Queen Elizabeth continues a Cunard naming tradition extending back to the original Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth 2.
Her Alaska deployments demonstrate the variety of itineraries undertaken by the modern Cunard fleet beyond the company's historic transatlantic service.
Our June 27, 2022 visit to Icy Strait Point forms part of the record of our seven-night voyage aboard the ship and documents another stage of Queen Elizabeth's Alaska service.
