Our 10-day Caribbean cruise aboard Zuiderdam (Holland America Line) brought us to Oranjestad, Aruba, on April 1, 2026. The colorful waterfront and harbor provided the setting for our visit aboard the first of Holland America’s four Vista-class ships.
Entering service in 2002, Zuiderdam is the first of Holland America Line’s four Vista-class ships. Built by Fincantieri in Italy, she introduced a new generation of larger Holland America ships with more balcony accommodations while retaining the line’s emphasis on traditional cruising and destination-focused itineraries.

History and Features
Construction and Entry Into Service:
Zuiderdam was built by Fincantieri at its Marghera shipyard near Venice, Italy.
She entered service in 2002 as the first member of Holland America Line’s Vista Class.
Her name translates roughly as “South Dam” in Dutch and continues Holland America’s long tradition of ship names ending in “dam.”
Oosterdam, Westerdam, and Noordam followed to complete the four-ship Vista Class.
The class represented a significant increase in size and balcony accommodations compared with Holland America’s earlier ships.
Design and Features:
Zuiderdam was designed with a large number of ocean-view and balcony accommodations.
Her central atrium provides a focal point for the ship’s interior public spaces.
The Lido Pool features a retractable roof, allowing the area to be used in different weather conditions.
The Sea View Pool provides an additional outdoor pool and open deck area at the stern.
Dining venues include the Dining Room, Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto, Lido Market, and Dive-In.
Entertainment and gathering spaces include World Stage, Billboard Onboard, Rolling Stone Lounge, and the Crow’s Nest.
Service:
Zuiderdam has operated a wide variety of itineraries during more than two decades with Holland America Line.
Her deployments have included the Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, Canada and New England, and longer international voyages.
The ship has also operated Holland America’s Grand World Voyage.
During the 2025–26 season, Zuiderdam operated Caribbean cruises from Florida that included calls throughout the southern Caribbean.
As of September 2026, she remains in active service with Holland America Line.
Our 2026 Caribbean Cruise:
We sailed aboard Zuiderdam on a 10-day Caribbean cruise in March and April 2026.
The voyage took us into the southern Caribbean and included the Dutch Caribbean islands.
Zuiderdam arrived in Oranjestad, Aruba, on April 1, 2026.
Aruba provided one of the major port calls during our voyage aboard the ship.
The cruise was part of Holland America Line’s 2025–26 Caribbean season.
Vista Class:
Holland America Line’s Vista Class consists of Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, and Noordam.
The four ships entered service between 2002 and 2006.
Zuiderdam established the basic design that was developed across the remainder of the class.
Their size allows the ships to operate everything from shorter regional cruises to longer destination-focused voyages.
Legacy:
As the first Vista-class ship, Zuiderdam marked an important change in Holland America Line’s fleet at the beginning of the 2000s.
Her design influenced the three Vista-class ships that followed and related vessels built for other Carnival Corporation brands.
