Day 7 of our 10-day Caribbean cruise aboard Zuiderdam (Holland America Line) brought us to Oranjestad, Aruba, on April 1, 2026. Following our extended visit to Curaçao the previous day, we continued through the southern Caribbean aboard the first of Holland America’s Vista-class ships.
Zuiderdam marked an important change in Holland America Line’s fleet when she entered service in 2002 as the first of the company’s Vista-class ships. Built by Fincantieri at Marghera, Italy, the ship was larger than the Holland America vessels that preceded her and introduced significantly more balcony accommodations while retaining many of the traditional elements associated with the line. Zuiderdam was followed by sister ships Oosterdam, Westerdam, and Noordam, with their names representing the four points of the compass in Dutch. Named by television journalist Joan Lunden, Zuiderdam began a career that has included the Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, and some of Holland America’s longest Grand Voyages. More than two decades later, she remains an active member of the fleet.

History and Features
Construction and Entry Into Service:
Zuiderdam was constructed by Fincantieri at its Marghera shipyard near Venice, Italy, and entered service for Holland America Line in 2002.
She was the first ship of Holland America’s Vista class, a new generation that represented a significant increase in size compared with many of the line’s earlier vessels.
Television journalist Joan Lunden served as the ship’s godmother.
Three additional Holland America Vista-class ships followed: Oosterdam in 2003, Westerdam in 2004, and Noordam in 2006.
The names of the four ships represent the points of the compass in Dutch: south, east, west, and north. “Zuider” derives from the Dutch word for south.
The class became an important part of Holland America’s transition into a larger generation of modern cruise ships during the early 2000s.
Design and Features:
The Vista-class design provided significantly more balcony accommodations than earlier generations of Holland America ships.
At approximately 936 feet long and 106 feet wide, Zuiderdam was considerably larger than many of the ships that preceded her in the fleet.
Her dimensions were also developed with the original Panama Canal locks in mind, giving Holland America flexibility to operate the ship on Panama Canal itineraries.
Public spaces include multiple restaurants and lounges, entertainment venues, pools, spa and fitness facilities, and outdoor promenade and observation areas.
The ship also continues Holland America Line’s longstanding tradition of displaying art and maritime-inspired decorative collections throughout its passenger spaces.
Zuiderdam underwent a significant drydock refurbishment in 2019. The work updated passenger accommodations and public spaces and incorporated newer Holland America dining and entertainment concepts while retaining the basic Vista-class arrangement.
Service:
Zuiderdam has maintained a varied deployment pattern throughout her career, operating in Alaska, the Caribbean, Europe, and through the Panama Canal.
Her size and design have also made her suitable for longer international itineraries.
In addition to conventional cruises, Holland America has selected Zuiderdam for some of its longest Grand Voyages.
The ship has operated Grand World Voyages that circumnavigate the globe over several months, continuing a tradition of extended cruising that has long been associated with Holland America Line.
These voyages have taken Zuiderdam far beyond her seasonal Caribbean and Alaska deployments and have made long-distance cruising an increasingly important part of her later career.
Our 2026 Caribbean Cruise:
We traveled aboard Zuiderdam during a 10-day Caribbean cruise in March and April 2026.
Traveling aboard the ship allowed us to document Zuiderdam throughout the voyage rather than during a single encounter in port.
March 31 was Day 6 and brought us to Willemstad, Curaçao, where an extended call provided both daytime and nighttime views of the ship.
After departing Curaçao, Zuiderdam made the relatively short passage west through the southern Caribbean toward Aruba.
April 1 was Day 7 of our cruise and brought us to Oranjestad.

Oranjestad, Aruba – April 1, 2026:
Day 7 brought Zuiderdam to Oranjestad, the capital and principal cruise port of Aruba.
Aruba lies in the southern Caribbean just off the coast of Venezuela and, together with Curaçao and Bonaire, forms the group traditionally known as the ABC islands.
Oranjestad developed around the island’s harbor and today serves as Aruba’s administrative and commercial center as well as its principal cruise destination.
The city is known for colorful Dutch Caribbean architecture, while Aruba’s dry climate produces an arid landscape noticeably different from many of the greener Caribbean islands farther north.
Our April 1 visit followed Zuiderdam’s call at Willemstad, Curaçao, on March 31, giving us consecutive port days in two of the Dutch Caribbean’s best-known destinations.
Having arrived aboard Zuiderdam, we were able to photograph the ship as part of our own cruise and continue the record of the voyage from the previous day in Curaçao.
After our day in Aruba, Zuiderdam continued the remaining portion of our 10-day Caribbean cruise.
Grand Voyages:
Long voyages have become an important part of Zuiderdam’s later career.
Holland America has used the ship for its Grand World Voyage program, placing Zuiderdam in a role historically associated with extended international passenger travel.
These voyages can keep the ship away from her home port for several months and include destinations across multiple continents.
The assignments demonstrate the versatility of the Vista-class design more than two decades after Zuiderdam entered service, allowing the same ship to operate 10-day Caribbean cruises such as our 2026 voyage as well as journeys around much of the world.
Legacy:
Zuiderdam introduced the Vista-class design to Holland America Line and helped establish the direction of the company’s fleet during the early 2000s.
Her combination of increased balcony accommodations, larger public spaces, and dimensions suitable for worldwide cruising proved successful enough for Holland America to introduce three additional Vista-class ships.
Continued refurbishments have allowed Zuiderdam to remain active while retaining the fundamental design and identity with which she entered service in 2002.
Her career now spans conventional Caribbean and Alaska cruises, European and Panama Canal itineraries, and extended Grand World Voyages, giving the first Holland America Vista-class ship a particularly varied service history.
