March 31, 2026 | Caribbean Cruise – Day 6: Willemstad, Curaçao

Day 6 of our 10-day Caribbean cruise aboard Zuiderdam (Holland America Line) brought us to Willemstad, Curaçao, on March 31, 2026. Our extended visit provided both daytime and nighttime views of the ship before we continued to Aruba the following day.

Zuiderdam marked the beginning of an important generation of Holland America Line cruise ships when she entered service in 2002. Built by Fincantieri at Marghera, Italy, she was the first of Holland America’s four Vista-class ships and introduced a larger, more contemporary design while retaining many elements associated with the line’s long passenger-ship tradition. Her arrival was followed by three sister ships whose names, like Zuiderdam, represent the four points of the compass in Dutch: Oosterdam, Westerdam, and Noordam. More than two decades after entering service, Zuiderdam continues to operate a particularly varied schedule of Caribbean cruises, Alaska voyages, European itineraries, Panama Canal cruises, and extended Grand Voyages.

History and Features

Construction and Entry Into Service:

  • Zuiderdam was constructed by Fincantieri at its Marghera shipyard near Venice, Italy, for Holland America Line.

  • She entered service in 2002 as the first vessel of Holland America’s Vista class.

  • The Vista design represented a significant increase in size compared with many of the Holland America ships that preceded her and provided considerably more balcony accommodations.

  • Three additional Holland America Vista-class ships followed: Oosterdam in 2003, Westerdam in 2004, and Noordam in 2006.

  • The four names reference the points of the compass in Dutch, with “zuid” meaning south.

Design and Features:

  • The Vista-class ships were designed to combine a more contemporary cruise-ship layout with elements of Holland America Line’s traditional passenger experience.

  • At approximately 936 feet long and 106 feet wide, Zuiderdam was considerably larger than the previous generation of Holland America ships when she entered service.

  • Her dimensions were also influenced by the original Panama Canal locks, allowing the Vista-class ships to operate Panama Canal itineraries.

  • A large percentage of the ship’s outside accommodations include private balconies, an increasingly important feature when the class was developed.

  • Public areas include restaurants, lounges, entertainment venues, pools, spa and fitness facilities, and outdoor promenade and observation spaces.

  • Holland America’s longstanding emphasis on maritime art and decorative collections is also represented throughout the ship.

  • Refurbishments during her career have updated accommodations, dining venues, entertainment spaces, and other passenger areas while retaining the fundamental Vista-class design.

Service:

  • During more than two decades of service, Zuiderdam has operated throughout the Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, and other regions.

  • Her schedule has included both conventional cruises and much longer international voyages.

  • Holland America has also used Zuiderdam for extended Grand Voyages, including lengthy itineraries that take the ship to destinations around the world.

  • This combination of regional cruises and extended voyages has given Zuiderdam one of the more varied careers within the Holland America fleet.

Our 2026 Caribbean Cruise:

  • We traveled aboard Zuiderdam on a 10-day Caribbean cruise in March and April 2026.

  • March 31 was Day 6 of our voyage and brought us to Willemstad, Curaçao.

  • Being aboard the ship allowed us to document Zuiderdam throughout the port call rather than during only a brief encounter from shore.

  • The extended stay provided both daytime and nighttime views of the ship in Willemstad.

  • After Curaçao, our voyage continued west to Oranjestad, Aruba, on April 1 for Day 7 of the cruise.

  • Our separate Aruba gallery continues the photographic record of the same 10-day voyage aboard Zuiderdam.

Willemstad, Curaçao – March 31, 2026:

  • Day 6 brought Zuiderdam to Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao and one of the most recognizable port cities in the southern Caribbean.

  • Willemstad developed around the entrance to the large natural harbor of Schottegat, giving maritime trade an important role in the city’s history.

  • The historic districts surrounding Sint Anna Bay are known for their Dutch Caribbean architecture and brightly colored buildings.

  • Willemstad’s historic center and harbor have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their distinctive architecture and the city’s development as a Caribbean trading settlement.

  • The port call provided opportunities to view Zuiderdam in daylight against the harbor and city before seeing the ship again after dark.

  • As evening arrived, the illuminated ship, harbor, and city created a noticeably different setting from the daytime views earlier in our visit.

  • The combination of daytime and nighttime photographs provides a more complete record of Zuiderdam’s March 31 visit to Curaçao.

  • After departing Willemstad, Zuiderdam continued to Oranjestad, Aruba, for Day 7 of our cruise on April 1.

Legacy:

  • Zuiderdam introduced the Vista-class design to Holland America Line and helped establish the direction of the company’s fleet during the early 2000s.

  • The class combined Holland America’s traditional identity with the larger scale, increased number of balconies, and expanded amenities becoming standard aboard modern cruise ships.

  • Her three Holland America sister ships followed over the next several years, making the Vista class an important part of the company’s fleet development.

  • More than two decades after entering service, Zuiderdam remains active on itineraries ranging from Caribbean cruises like our 2026 voyage to extended international Grand Voyages.
